Need a betting cheat sheet before the Final Four gets underway this weekend? We’ve got you covered.
Texas Tech/Auburn in trouble?
No. 3 Texas Tech and No. 5 Auburn have both made impressive runs through the NCAA Tournament. The Red Raiders routed No. 2 Michigan before dismantling No. 1 Gonzaga in the Elite Eight; the Tigers unseated No. 1 North Carolina prior to edging conference foe and No. 2-seeded Kentucky.
The Final Four, however, has not been kind to underdogs.
The lower-seeded teams in the Final Four are on a 9-19-1 run against the spread and only five of the previous 24 teams in that situation have won outright. Teams with a top-five seed who won their Sweet 16 and Elite 8 games as underdogs and are getting points in the Final Four are just 1-6 straight up and 2-5 against the spread.
Auburn overs still running hot
Tired legs? Nonsense. Auburn ran through the SEC Tournament en route to a conference championship and has continued to put up points at a torrid pace throughout March Madness.
Not only have the Tigers gone over the total in all four of their tournament games so far, but they’re sailing comfortably past the number by an average of 11.7 points per game. Virginia’s No. 1-ranked defensive efficiency by KenPom‘s metric will be a different animal, but the Cavaliers have let eight of their previous 10 opponents in the NCAA Tournament hit the team total over.
The Auburn-Virginia total is currently at 131, with the Tigers’ team total over in the 63.5 range.
Michigan State is among the nation’s best at covering
Only the Drake Bulldogs were better at covering the spread this season than the Michigan State Spartans.
Head coach Tom Izzo and Co. are 27-11 against the spread this year and 15-2 against the number as a single-digit favorite, which makes Sparty an intriguing side to bet when they face off against Texas Tech.
