UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw beat his rival and former Team Alpha Male teammate Cody Garbrandt via first-round TKO to retain his title Saturday in the main event of UFC 227 in Los Angeles.
Garbrandt initially appeared to have learned from his first loss to Dillashaw, beginning the bout patiently and using his kicks far more than he did at UFC 217.
However, history started to repeat itself. Garbrandt was overly aggressive in trying to return the favor and knock out Dillashaw, who made him pay with strong counters.
A hurt Garbrandt attempted to take down Dillashaw, but instead caught several rights that put him on the mat again. The champ then pounded on his rival, connecting with punches and a knee until the referee was forced to step in.
“I am the best bantamweight of all time,” boasted a jubilant Dillashaw after the fight.
Dillashaw extended his UFC record to 12-3 with the victory, while Garbrandt falls to 6-2 after starting his UFC career undefeated.
