When the medical suspensions for Bellator 170 were released, one particular injury stood out from the rest.
According to the report released by the California State Athletic Commission, welterweight fighter Christian Gonzalez will be sidelined indefinitely with an unreported stab wound. Gonzalez spoke to Amy Kaplan of Champions.co on Thursday to explain the bizarre situation leading up to fight night.
The attack apparently came from an unfamiliar associate of Gonzalez’s friends who inexplicably stabbed him when he came over to greet them on the street.
“I was trying not to be rude,” Gonzalez said. “And then he stabbed me. The police caught him later and he’s in jail now. I still have no idea why he did what he did.”
Gonzalez was taken to the hospital where he was unresponsive for eight hours. The injury left him unable to train, but he refused to cancel his Bellator 170 bout out of obligation to those who had purchased tickets to see him fight.
Unfortunately for Gonzalez, his incapacitated state led to him coming in overweight for his bout with Daniel Rodriguez and he would go on to lose by second-round TKO. Worse, his stab wound re-opened during the bout, resulting in him receiving an indefinite suspension from competition.
Despite all that, Gonzalez remains confident in his abilities and he expects to make a full recovery.
“I was only at 25 percent, having not trained at all the week before,” Gonzalez said. “I wasn’t able to fight like I normally do, but it is what it is. I’m going to get back to 100 percent and hopefully get a rematch with Daniel. I will be much stronger next time.”
