Rafael dos Anjos won’t be fighting Colby Covington in his native Brazil.
After multiple reports had Dos Anjos facing Covington in May at UFC 224 in Rio de Janeiro, the promotion announced during Friday's 25th anniversary presser the pair will instead square off for an interim welterweight crown in the co-main event of UFC 225 at Chicago's United Center on June 9.
The matchup’s victor will presumably square off with reigning champion Tyron Woodley, who’s currently recovering from shoulder surgery and out of commission until August.
Dos Anjos moved up from 155 pounds in June of last year, scoring three straight victories over Tarec Saffiedine, Neil Magny, and Robbie Lawler, the latter win a lopsided decision picked up at UFC on FOX 26 in December.
Covington, meanwhile, has won five straight and all but one of his nine promotional bouts, most recently taking a unanimous verdict over former title challenger Demian Maia this past October at UFC Fight Night 119.
Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker will defend his crown against Yoel Romero in a rematch to close out the bill.
