Former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic said he talked to the UFC about a rematch with Daniel Cormier at UFC 230, but the promotion declined to offer him a bout.
Miocic said conversations took place as the company searched for a new headliner to bolster the Nov. 3 card at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
“I was in talks to offer myself up to headline and help save that card, but I was never offered (Cormier),” Miocic toldvia text message. “I would fight (Cormier) any time, anywhere. I look forward to getting my belt back.”
Miocic surrendered the belt to Cormier in July, when he was knocked out by DC in Round 1 at UFC 226. The 36-year-old held the title for over two years and has been vocal about his desire for a rematch.
The UFC announced Tuesday a blockbuster main event for UFC 230, as Cormier will put his championship on the line for the first time against Derrick Lewis.
