Chris Davis and Brandon Hyde are back on good terms.
The Baltimore Orioles first baseman and manager met for over an hour on Friday to talk about, and move on from, a dugout altercation that occurred Wednesday.
“We talked, we made amends,” Davis said, according to MLB.com’s Joe Trezza. “We knew it wasn’t going to be an issue. Not too long after it happened, we knew it was just one of those things. We are going to get through it and be better for it.”
Davis explained to reporters that he reached a “boiling point” during the fifth inning of Wednesday’s 14-2 loss to the New York Yankees when he failed to scoop a low throw from shortstop Jonathan Villar.
TV cameras then caught Davis and Hyde arguing with each other in Baltimore’s dugout. The hulking first baseman lunged at his manager before he was restrained by teammate Mark Trumbo and hitting coach Don Long. Jace Peterson then came in to pinch hit in Davis’ next at-bat.
The former All-Star wouldn’t reveal what Hyde said to him, insisting they’re leaving the incident behind.
“We’re moving forward, we have so much to look forward to and I don’t want this to be made into something that it’s not,” Davis explained. “I don’t want it to be blown out of proportion. These things happen over the course of a season, and I’m sure it’s not the last time it’s going to happen.”
Davis added: “He and I, from Day 1, have sat down and talked about what it’s going to look like, what challenges we might face, and agreed that as long as we were open and honest with each other, that it was something that we were going to be able to tackle together. And that hasn’t changed. Not even in the least bit. I’ll be glad when this is all behind us as far as the outside world is concerned, because we’ve turned the page.”
The 33-year-old has struggled to a .182/.269/.320 slash line with nine home runs and 31 RBIs this season. He began the 2019 campaign in an 0-for-33 slump after going hitless in his final 18 at-bats in 2018.
