Some members of the fight community believe referee Marc Goddard was responsible for the most decisive move in Dustin Poirier and Eddie Alvarez’s rematch Saturday.
Alvarez threw a 90-degree elbow to Poirier’s shoulder from the top-control position in the middle of the second round of the UFC Calgary headliner. Goddard stood the fighters up, issued Alvarez a warning, and took away his positional advantage.
Soon thereafter, Poirier stopped Alvarez with a flurry of strikes.
Some observers weren’t happy with Goddard’s decision, including welterweight Kamaru Usman, who criticized the referee on Twitter.
Goddard was ready to defend his position.
Usman appeared to be satisfied with the ref’s defense.
