Althoughplayed near-perfect golf for 17 holes in Round 2 of The Players Championship, a costly quadruple-bogey on TPC Sawgrass’ famed island green limited to him to a 1-under 71.
Tiger, who started Friday’s round on the back nine, opened with two quick birdies and jumped to 3-under with another red number on 16. He walked toward the vaunted 17th only two shots behind the leaders.
His tee shot on the 146-yard par 3 landed on the putting surface but rolled off the back and trickled into the water. His third shot after a drop was even worse, as he pulled a 100-yard wedge that had no chance of staying dry. Woods finally hit the center of the green and two-putted for a quadruple-bogey seven.
“The second wedge didn’t really surprise me, it was too flat,” Woods said of his third shot, according to. “The first one I hit surprised me.”
He added two birdies on his closing nine to finish at 3-under for the tournament, likely securing his spot to play the weekend.
“Anyone who makes the cut has a chance,” he.
Tiger started and ended Round 2 five shots behind the leaders.
