Bobby Allison Prompts New Safety Measures
Bobby Allison had such a violent crash at the Talladega Superspeedway that it prompted NASCAR to implement new safety mandates. Allison blew an engine as he drove down the frontstretch, sending him airborne into the catch fence. Luckily, his car stayed in the track despite tearing nearly 100 feet of the fence. After the accident, NASCAR required restrictor plates that kept speeds below 200 mph, thought to be the speed that cars were likely to liftoff.
